netnet.studio is a web application. It runs entirely in a standard web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc) and requires no software installation, no accounts, no plugins, and no configuration on institutional devices or networks. Students access it the same way they access any website, by navigating to netnet.studio in a browser they already have. The source code is publicly available at github.com/netizenorg/netnet.studio.
The information below is provided to support appropraite review of its use as a web-based teaching and learning platform, including common IT, privacy, data handling, and procurement considerations.
An institutional support agreement is a professional services contract with netizen.org, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is not a software license or a software procurement. Institutions are not purchasing access to the platform, they are supporting its continued development and receiving consulting services in return.
Priority Support: A dedicated contact for faculty and staff. Questions, issues, or accessibility needs receive a response within 48 hours. General users are supported through community forums; institutional supporters have direct access.
Curriculum Consultation: 1–2 video call sessions per year with a member of the netnet.studio team. Sessions focus on reviewing syllabi, advising on which platform features best support specific assignments, and helping faculty integrate netnet.studio into their course structure.
Stability Assurance: A written commitment that as long as the support agreement is active, the platform will be maintained and the institution will receive a minimum of six months' notice before any significant changes to features or availability.
Custom Educational Content: Up to two annotated demos or tutorial materials per year, tailored to the institution's specific curriculum. These are created using netnet's built-in authoring tools and can be used directly in class.
Institutional Attribution: The institution is credited as a supporter on the netnet.studio project page and documentation.

The following addresses common institutional IT questions directly, if you have additional questions contact hi@netizen.org.
netnet.studio is served exclusively over HTTPS (TLS encryption). All student work is processed locally in the user's browser: no code, files, or personal data is stored on netnet.studio servers during typical use. On rare occasions, students may opt in to our URL shortener, which stores the code to a sketch on our server to generate a shorter link; students are notified and must confirm each time before any data is stored. There is nothing to encrypt on the institution's end because nothing passes through institutional infrastructure.
netnet.studio has no user accounts and collects no personal data. Students do not register, log in, or create profiles. The only optional third-party connection is GitHub: students may connect their own personal GitHub account to save and version their work, this uses their own credentials and is entirely under their control.
For site analytics, netnet.studio uses Plausible, a privacy-preserving analytics platform that collects no personal data, sets no cookies, and is fully GDPR-compliant. No data is shared with advertising networks or third-party trackers.
There is no software to install, license, or track. No institutional devices are modified. No IT configuration is required. Access requires only a standard web browser, which is already present on any institution-issued device.
netnet.studio does not require institutional credentials, does not integrate with institutional SSO or directory systems, and does not connect to or access any institutional networks or internal systems. Students interact with it as they would any public website. No agents, plugins, or extensions are installed on institutional hardware.
netnet.studio does not collect, process, or store student education records as defined under FERPA. No personally identifiable student information is transmitted to netnet.studio servers. Student work remains in the student's own browser. Because netnet.studio neither receives nor handles education records on behalf of an institution, it falls outside FERPA's scope entirely and does not require a data sharing agreement or FERPA compliance review.
netnet.studio is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPLv3), a widely recognized open-source license. There is no proprietary software license to review, approve, or manage. The institutional support agreement is a professional services contract with netizen.org, equivalent to a technical support agreement or consulting engagement, not a software procurement.
netnet.studio does not overlap with or replace any standard institutional software. It is a specialized environment for creative web coding, distinct from general-purpose tools covered by Microsoft, Adobe, or other enterprise agreements. No conflicts with existing site licenses exist.
netnet.studio has been used in creative coding and media art curricula at the following institutions, among others:
It has been tested with hundreds of students over five years of active classroom use.
